The event held on Saturday 24th, May 2025, kicked off with a lively dance therapy session, getting the kids and parents moving and grooving together. This was followed by speeches from the General ManagerCEO of National Theatre, Mrs Tola Akerele and CEO of SMIDS Animation Studio, Dami Solesi Mrs. Solesi shared her personal journey in animation, highlighting the challenges she faced and the opportunities she seized. Mrs Tola Akerele encouraged the kids to take advantage of the resources available to them, noting that they are privileged to learn animation in comfort
Highlights from the event included a film screening of African cartoons, including: “Belly Flop” from South Africa, “Kalabanda” from Uganda, “Super Sema” from Kenya, “Hadu” from Nigeria, and “Uli & Tata” from Kenya. The kids were thrilled to see their favorite characters come to life on the big screen.
The workshop was a huge success, with kids participating in drawing,painting and animation sessions. At the drawing and painting segment, the young artists were given pictures to draw and paint, unleashing their creativity and imagination.
Meanwhile, at the animation studio, the kids were taught how to create their own cartoons on screens, bringing their ideas to life.
Through this event, National Theatre and SMIDS Animation Studio demonstrated commitment to promoting cultural preservation and empowerment through animation. By providing a platform for kids to learn and express themselves creatively, the organisations are nurturing the next generation of African animators and storytellers.
The Hon. Minister of Culture, Art, and Creative Economy was represented by Moriam Ajaga, Special Adviser to the President. She gave a speech on behalf of the Minister before presenting a certificate of participation to the joyful kids
